Roy Eugene Johnson, age 85, of Waseca formerly of Janesville passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Monday, February 13, 2017 at Foxdale Memory Care of Waseca.
Roy was born on August 5th, 1931, to Orel and Lorena (Prentis) Johnson in Adams, MN. He attended LeRoy High School where he was very active in sports and choir. Following his high school graduation with the class of 1950, Roy enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and was stationed at Twenty-Nine Palms, California. After being honorably discharged he returned to Minnesota and while attending Minnesota State University Mankato he met his future wife, Catherine Ann Finley. They were united in marriage on August 1, 1956, at St. Ann Catholic Church in Janesville. Together they lived in Mankato for three years before moving to Janesville and raising their eight children.
Roy owned and operated the Finley Brothers Fairway Foods Grocery Store in Janesville for 25 years. The same grocery store had previously been in the Finley family for over 100 years. Roy continued working in the grocery business for various companies as a sales representative until his retirement in 2008.
He was a member of St. Ann Catholic Church, Janesville Knights of Columbus, Janesville Rotary Club, American Legion, Chamber of Commerce, and MGA (Minnesota Grocers Association). Above all he truly appreciated and cherished the relationships he made over the years with the community.
Roy is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Ann; his eight children: Tom (Angela) of Cincinnati, OH, Liz (Scott) Dorn of Edina, Terry (Ruth) of Rochester, Timothy of Waconia, Ted (Jill) of Edina, Chris (Mischel Peacock) of St. Louis Park, Bill of Naperville, IL and Julie (Dan) Moran of Evergreen Park, IL; 19 grandchildren: Robby, Emily and Nicole Dorn, Anthony, Brooke and Luke Johnson, Ayla, Tyler and Ashley Johnson, Zachary and Tess Johnson, Mel and Mackie Peacock, Bobby, Joey and Isabelle Johnson, and Molly, Grace and Danny Moran; nieces, nephews, and many relatives.
Proceeded in death by his parents; one brother; Willard and one sister; Lois Clark.
Faith, Family, and Friends were very important to our Dad. He had a big heart and enthusiasm for life.
The family would like to thank all the kind and compassionate caregivers of Foxdale Memory Care in Waseca and St. Croix Hospice.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, February 18, 2017, at St. Ann Catholic Church in Janesville. Interment will be in St. Ann Cemetery with military honors. Visitation will begin at 9:00 AM on Saturday at the church. Memorials are preferred to St. Ann Catholic Church or St. Croix Hospice.
