MICHAEL GENE BURHOP, age 70 of Mankato, formerly of Janesville, died on the morning of Friday, February 24, 2023 at Oaklawn Rehabilitation Center in Mankato.
Mike was born in Faribault on December 3, 1952, to parents Ercell and Daisy (James) Burhop. He was one of twelve children. He attended school in Janesville before enlisting in the United States Army. Following his first four years he re-enlisted and served in Germany and Thailand. Mike was married to Diane Bahr on June 9, 1979 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in North Mankato. He worked for over twenty years at Truth Hardware before his failing health forced his retirement. Mike enjoyed summer fishing and ice fishing, loved to tinker with mechanics, enjoyed junking with his friends, and helped his wife collect antiques, especially bells and interesting copper and brass pieces. Mike was proud to have maintained his sobriety for over thirty years. He was well known, well liked, and was the most helpful man you could ever meet.
Michael is survived by his wife, Diane of Mankato; a special “adopted” son, Nathan Danberry of Mankato; seven siblings, Everett Chester, Robert (Nancy) Burhop, James Burhop, Merry Stanke, Lois (Kim) Caron, Evon Claybaugh, and Laurie (Duane) Johansen; as well as countless nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by both of his parents; three brothers; one sister; and several in-laws.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, March 2, 2023 at the Janesville United Methodist Church, with Rev. Kathy King officiating. Visitation will be held for one hour before the service at the church. Interment will be held at Ft. Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis at a later date.
