MERLEN HAROLD GEKELER, age 79, of Waseca died on Thursday, February 4, 2021, at Methodist Hospital in Rochester.
Born on March 24, 1941, in Mankato to Harold and Beatrice (Steinke) Gekeler. He attended Waseca Central High School, graduating with the class of 1959. Following his education, Merlen enlisted into the United States Army, serving in the reserves from 1960 - 1966. Following his honorable discharge, he went to barber school and worked for Coca Cola in Minneapolis before moving back to Waseca. Merlen worked from Midwest Electric in Mankato for a couple of years and Schraeder Construction for a short time before starting Gekeler Roofing and Construction in Waseca, where he was able to provide employment for many over his 43 year career. Merlen loved dancing and music, especially “The King”. He began an Elvis Presley Collection in high school, beginning with one record album and grew it to include sets of plates, statues, and Elvis stamps. He was an avid fan of classic cars, collectables, and auctions. Merlen was a member of American Legion Post #228 in Waseca and Trinity Lutheran Church in Janesville.
Survived by his siblings: Marlyn (Sue Clayton) Gekeler of Janesville, Harlan (Virginia) Gekeler of Waseca, Cheryleen Mullerleile of Waseca, Maureen (Dale) Sonday of Waseca, and Doreen (Robert) Hoffman of Waseca; and many nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by his parents.
A public graveside service will be held on Saturday, May 15, 2021 at 10:00 AM at Woodville Cemetery in Waseca.
