Maynard G. Buland
MAYNARD G. BULAND, age 86, died at his home in Waseca on Saturday, April 29, 2017.
Born on February 11, 1931, Maynard was the son of Howard and Ethel (Johnson) Buland. As a high school student, he worked in his fathers plumbing business for two years before graduating from Waseca High School in 1949 with athletic letters in football, wrestling, and tennis. He also earned the rank of Eagle Scout and continued on to earn both bronze and silver palms. Maynard was united in marriage to Norma Jean Burgi on May 20, 1952 in Owatonna. They have since spent nearly sixty-five years together. In 1951 Maynard enlisted in the Navy and served four years on the USS Missouri (BB63). Three years and eight months of his enlistment were active sea duty. While he was aboard, the Missouri served in Korean waters and also trained midshipmen while cruising to ten different countries. He was honorably discharged in 1955. When his father died, Maynard assumed management of Modern Plumbing and Heating Company. In 1957 he became the first Minnesota state-licensed master plumber in Waseca.
Maynard was an active member of Faith United Methodist Church in Waseca since his early childhood. He was on the Boy Scouts of America troop committee for twenty-seven years, and was active with his sons when they were in the Scouts. He was past president of the Waseca Jaycees, and was active in the American Legion, VFW, VFW Funeral Squad, USS Missouri Association, and the Chicago Northwestern Railroad Historical Society. Maynard enjoyed family get-togethers, model railroading, and fishing trips in northern Minnesota and Canada.
He is survived by his wife, Norma of Waseca; three children, Susan (Dr. Peter) Law of Memphis, TN, Eric Buland of Waseca, Glenn (Katie) Buland of Waseca; his twin sister, Mavis (Bob) Schwartz of Bloomington; and four grandchildren, Kristy (Jeremie) Cannon of Memphis, TN, Joshua (Lisa) Law of Memphis, TN, Jacob Buland of Waseca, and Madeline Buland of Waseca. He is also survived by three great-grandchildren, Joseph, Abigail, and Samuel Cannon of Memphis, TN; one sister-in-law, Yvonne Burgi of Mankato; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Les and Betty Oeltjenbruns of Owatonna; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by both of his parents; and two brothers, Berton and Lloyd Buland.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00am on Wednesday, May 3, 2017 at Faith United Methodist Church in Waseca, with Rev. Victor Waters officiating. Visitation will be held from 9:30am until the time of the service at the church on Wednesday. A private interment with military honors will be held at Woodville Cemetery in Waseca.
