MARY SUSAN (SPLETT) OPSAHL, age 59 of Elysian, passed away at her home on Saturday, December 17, 2022.
Mary was born to Melvin and Kathleen (Biggins) Splett on October 21, 1963, in Faribault, MN. She went to Waterville-Elysian School and graduated in 1982. She was very active in her school years: participating in volleyball, basketball, softball, choir & band. As a result, she has many lasting memories & good friends yet today from high school. She went on to attend Mankato State University & graduated with a teaching degree. Mary spent her entire life in the education field. Teaching in Cleveland, Montgomery, & Waseca school districts living out her life’s mission of influencing young adults, before retiring in 2022. Mary taught Driver’s Education & spent summers teaching behind the wheel. Mary was on the Elysian City Council for 17 years.
Mary was a wonderful wife, mother, sister, friend and grandmother, who will be deeply missed by her family and friends. Mary loved her family deeply & was always there if anyone needed anything. She was the party planner and loved to host family get togethers, especially 4th of July celebrations, everyone was always welcome. She was the glue that held the family together. Mary lived a full, busy life & loved spending time with her children. She enjoyed camping, tubing down the river, trout fishing, traveling, following the MN Vikings, and attending Winstock music festival annually. She LOVED her fresh tomatoes & enjoyed canning tomatoes & cucumbers.
Mary will be lovingly remembered by her husband of 30 years, Mark; her two children, Cody Opsahl (Julie Sathre) of Faribault, Kyle (Tori) Opsahl of Waseca; stepson, Matt Opsahl; grandchildren, Felicia & one on the way, due in June 2023; siblings, Tom (Becky) Splett of Elysian, Dan Splett of Elysian, Patty Schumacher of Mankato, Terry (Kim) Splett of Bolton Point, New South Wales, sister-in-law, Tessie Splett of Cleveland, Joe (Julie) Splett of Elysian, Kris (Daryl) Erdman of Elyisan; and 25 nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, John and Jim Splett; sister, Barbara Splett; and father-in-law, Milford Opsahl.
Memorial service will be 3:00 PM on Monday, December 26, 2022 at the Waterville Chapel of Dennis-Steffel-Omtvedt Funeral and Cremation Service. Visitation will take place two hours before the service at the funeral chapel on Monday. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
