Margaret Malterer June 9, 1912 - July 11, 2011

Margaret M. (Kortuem) Malterer, age 99 of Janesville, died on Monday, July 11, 2011 at the Janesville Nursing Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, July 14th at 10:30 a.m. at St. Ann Catholic Church in Janesville with Fr. Peter Klein, Celebrant. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery, Madison Lake. Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m. at Arnoldt-McRaith Funeral Home & Crematory, and will continue on Thursday morning for one hour prior to services, at church. There will be a 7 p.m. parish rosary Wednesday evening, at the funeral home. Margaret was born June 9, 1912, to Francis and Ann (Flynn) Kortuem. She was raised near Marysburg, and attended All Saints Catholic School in Madison Lake. She married Joe Malterer on April 16, 1936, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church at Marysburg. They farmed at the Nine Mile Corner (Highways 14 & 60) for 42 years before moving to Janesville in 1978. Margaret and Joe were thrifty out of necessity, having lived through the desperate years of the depression. Through strong will and hard work they built a successful dairy farm. They raised six children and sent them to Catholic schools. Margaret liked to tell of her being struck by lightening while helping in the fields, and she readily showed her singed artifacts to prove it. In later years she enjoyed quilting and her grandchildren knew she could mend anything. She was particularly proud of her Irish heritage and she had a knack for ferreting out family connections. Margaret is survived by her sons Robert (Jane) Malterer of Waseca, James (Norma) Malterer of Faribault, Thomas (Bonnie) Malterer of Duluth, John (DeAnne) Malterer of Janesville, Matthew (Bonnie) Malterer of Madison Lake, and by her daughter Mary (Daniel) Elias of Hibbing; by 17 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Joseph on June 9, 1996; by her five brothers, William, Robert, James, Francis, Matthew, and her sister Alice Lipscy. Casketbearers are Margaret's six children.
