Kay graduated from Sumner High School and later was married to Carl Stewart on September 23, 1956, in Sumner. She and Carl owned and operated the Cedar Crest Motel for 15 years in Charles City, Iowa. Kay loved to play the organ and consistently provided music every Thursday at Pleasant Manor Nursing Home. Her volunteerism was recognized by the Faribault Daily News as an Unsung Hero, making her community a better place to live.

She is survived by her son, Terry (Linda) Stewart of Charles City, Iowa; two granddaughters, Holly (Ryan) Wright of Laporte, MN, and Amanda Stewart (partner, Melissa Boyson) of Harwood Heights, IL; two great grandchildren, Hunter and Tatiana
