Kathleen Ulmen, 72, of Janesville, Minnesota, passed away peacefully at Mayo Clinic Health System in Mankato on March 8th, 2025, surrounded by her loving family.
Born on June 15th, 1952, in Long Beach, California, Kathie led a life full of love, adventure, and service. She spent 26 years in the United States Marine Corps, where she dedicated herself to her work as a Criminal Investigator. Rising to the rank of Master Sergeant, she received numerous awards throughout her military career. It was during her time in the Marines that she met her best friend and soulmate, David Ulmen, with whom she would share her life and adventures.
After retiring from the Marines, Kathie devoted her time to Child Protective Services in Yuma, Arizona, where she impacted the lives of many children through her love, guidance, and nurturing spirit.
Following her military service, Kathie and her family relocated to Minnesota to join David on his small-town farming life. There, she embraced her new hobbies of farming, gardening, and cooking, while cherishing her most beloved role as a mother and caregiver. Kathie later worked as a Kitchen Manager at All Saints Catholic Church in Madison Lake, where she enjoyed serving others.
Kathie’s heart was as big as her capacity to care for others, and she volunteered her time and energy to her community in many meaningful ways. Alongside her volunteering, she loved to travel and spend quality time with her family, which she held dear.
Kathie is survived by her husband, David Ulmen; her children, Johnny, Theresa (Kenny) Gilpin of Pennsylvania, Terrance Ulmen of Mankato, Tina of Janesville, Audrianna of Oregon, Angela of Waseca, Krista (Mike Jahnke) of Janesville, and Hannah (Brandon Williams) of Mankato; and her beloved grandchildren, Leanne, Dalton, Victoria, Michael, Tara, Leighlan, Jacoby, and Isabelle. Each of them will miss her deeply.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas and Marylin Robertson, and her brothers, Thomas and Brian Robertson.
Kathie will be remembered for her devotion to family, her unwavering kindness, and her unshakable dedication to helping others. Her legacy will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her
