JULIE ZIEMKE, age 72, of Waseca died following a 7-year battle with cancer on Tuesday, July 4, 2023, at her home in Waseca surrounded by her loving family.
Born on May 9, 1951, in Waseca, she was the daughter of Stanley and Evelyn (Powell) Broughton. Julie was baptized as an infant and confirmed in her youth, both at Grace Lutheran Church in Waseca. She attended Waseca Public Schools, graduating with the class of 1969. Following her education Julie began working at Waseca Memorial Hospital. Later she worked at the Waseca Middle School and most recently for the City of Waseca Utilities department, where she worked for over 30 years before retiring in 2016. She loved her job and co-workers!
On May 8, 1971, Julie was united in marriage to her high school sweetheart, Terry Ziemke at Grace Lutheran Church in Waseca and together raised two wonderful daughters. Julie was a devoted wife, daughter, sister, mom, grandma, great grandma, sister-in-law, aunt, and friend. She enjoyed playing bingo, visiting casinos, trips to Las Vegas, shopping, going out to eat, and participating in progressive dinners at Christmas time with her girlfriends. Julie was an avid Minnesota Twins Fan and rarely missed an episode of the Bachelor. She always looked forward to her family’s annual trip to the Wisconsin Dells at Thanksgiving time. She cherished time spent with her family and friends. Most of all, she loved her time as “Grandma”, Julie’s grandchildren were the light of her life as family meant everything to her.
Julie is survived by her husband of 52 years, Terry of Waseca; daughters: Shannon (Ben) Cliff and Missy (Dustin) Roeker; six grandchildren: Taylor Ziemke, Kenzie (Tom) Starman, Kena Roeker, Keaton Roeker, Tristen Cliff, Talen Cliff; two great grandchildren: Gabe and Greta Ziemke. She is also survived by her two siblings: Dennis Broughton and Pam (Butch) Bartelt; step-brother, Randy Wetzel; sisters-in-law; brothers-in-law; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
She is preceded in death by her mother, Evelyn Wetzel; father, Stanley Broughton; stepfather, Warren Wetzel; stepmother, Phyllis Broughton; sister: Jan Belal; mother-in-law, Joyce Ziemke; father-in-law, Don Ziemke; and brothers-in-law, Scott Ziemke and Larry Anderson.
Visitation will be from 2:00-5:00 PM on Sunday, July 9, 2023, at the Third Street Chapel of Dennis-Steffel-Omtvedt Funeral and Cremation Service in Waseca. Visitation will continue for one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday.
Memorial service will be 11:00 AM on Monday July 10, 2023, at Grace Lutheran Church in Waseca. Interment will follow at Woodville Cemetery in Waseca.
