James F. Cerven, age 93, of Madison Lake died surrounded by his family on October 14, 2016 at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, October 20, 2016, at 10:30 am at All Saints Catholic Church in Madison Lake. Interment will be in Marysburg Cemetery at rural Madison Lake. Visitation will be from 4:00 7:00 pm on Wednesday, October 19, 2016 at All Saints Catholic Church and continues for one hour prior to the Mass at the church on Thursday. Memorials are preferred to the All Saints Building Fund.
Arrangements are with the Starkson & Steffel Funeral & Cremation Services ~ Arnoldt Chapel in Janesville.
James Francis Cerven was born on March 24, 1923, in Manhattan, New York to Frank and Mae (Phillips) Cerven. James worked in the Brooklyn Navy Yard as an electrician and in 1942, he enlisted in the United States Army. He was assigned to the 78th Lightning Division and proudly served his county.
On May 24, 1958, James was united in marriage to Dorothy Gavin at St. Benedicts Catholic Church in the Bronx and together they raised three children: James, Dorothy and John. James worked for the New York Telephone company, starting as a repair man and finished his career in security, retiring in 1985.
James had a heart of gold. He was proud of his children and grandchildren. He was the driving force behind the research for the 12 oil paintings and frames at All Saints Church. James was a member of Madison Lake Area Historical Society, Knights of Columbus and the Elysian American Legion Post 311. Later in life, James found a love for writing, he began writing a book called, "Circle of Life".
James is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Dorothy; children: James (Dawn) of Buckeye, AZ, Dorothy (Gregory) Wolff of Madison Lake, and John (Tara) of Poughquag, NY; 9 grandchildren: Samara and Chris Cerven, Kaitlin, Mackenzie and Andrew Wolff, and Sean, Meghan, James and Kate Cerven; sister, Anna Bolk of Islip, NY.
Preceded in death by his Parents and his brother, Francis.
