Hendrina "Rena" Hinton, age 93, of Janesville, died on Tuesday morning, June 11, 2019 at Koda Living Community in Owatonna.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 AM on Monday, June 17, at Church of St. Ann in Janesville with Fr. Michael Cronin as celebrant. Interment will be in St. Ann Catholic Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4-7 PM on Sunday, June 16, at Starkson & Steffel Funeral & Cremation Service ~ Arnoldt Chapel of Janesville. Visitation will continue for one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday.
Memorials are preferred to Good Council in Mankato.
Hendrina Alieda Hinton was born on the Fourth of July of 1925, in Vernon Center to John and Dora (Holland) Nissen. As a young girl, her family moved to various farm sites in Waseca County. She attended school at Good Council graduating in 1943. While in High School she would take the train home on weekends to help her father on the farm. On April 30, 1946, Rena was united in marriage to Thomas Hinton at St. Ann Catholic Church in Janesville. They made their home in rural Janesville on the Hinton Family Farm where they raised their four children. Rena and Thomas were blessed to have one son and they were honored to be able to adopt three children from Catholic Charities Adoption Agency. Rena was a dedicated farm wife, always willing to help wherever she was needed, from butchering chickens, to canning beef and produce. Together they shared 50 years of marriage before Thomas passed away in 1996. Rena worked at the Janesville Nursing Home for 17 years as a cook and continued to volunteer there by helping with weekly Mass.
Rena was a longtime faithful member of St. Ann Catholic Church in Janesville where she was a active in CCW, and Mother Seton Funeral Unit. She was a member of the Canasta Card Club. Rena enjoyed quilting & embroidering. She also loved serving and hosting various family gatherings at the farm. Rena is remembered for her strength as a mother and caregiver throughout her life. She will be dearly missed.
Rena is survived by her four children: John (Jennifer) Hinton of Palo Alto, CA, Brian (Laura) Hinton of Cleveland, OH, James (Janet Kramer) Hinton of New Richland, and Jennie Hinton of Rockford, IL; grandchildren: Chris Hinton, Joe Hinton, Jim Hinton, Phillip Hinton, Anthony Hinton, Jared Hinton, Jane Hinton, Sarah Tahir, Jared Boumeester, and Jill Akers; 12 great grandchildren; brothers: Mike Nissen of Virgin Islands, and Leo Nissen (Sabrina) of Waseca; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, and sister, Dorothy.
