Gordon "Grump" Greenwald, born on February 10, 1945, passed away peacefully with his loving wife by his side, on February 1, 2025, in Mankato, Minnesota, just days before his 80th birthday.
On July 8th, 1972, he married Sharon, his cherished wife of 52 years. Together, they built a close-knit family that includes their two daughters, Nancy (Greg) Swedin and Rachel (Pam) Greenwald. He was a proud grandfather to seven grandchildren—Lauren (Branden), RJ (Hà), Bryant, Eli, Izzy, Hazel, and Gordy—and found immense joy in being a great-grandfather to five great-grandchildren- Miracle, Wisdom, Brevik, Drekker, and Anthem.
A lifelong resident of the family home where he was born, Grump devoted his life to hard work and community service. From an early age, he worked alongside his father and brother tiling fields and hauling gravel where he earned his nickname, Grump. With a natural affinity for machinery and an unmatched work ethic, Grump spent over six decades plowing snow and hauling gravel for the township. He also hauled grain for local farmers—a role he cherished not only for the work but for the conversations it brought with neighbors and friends. Whether operating a semi-truck, snowplow, or road grader, Grump was truly at home behind the wheel of heavy equipment. He also served as a trusted driver for both school buses and the coach bus for Shattuck boys' hockey team. His dedication took him across the US and Canada with the team—a role he embraced with pride. Whether clearing roads during harsh winters or lending a hand to neighbors in need, he approached every task with pride and precision. Grump also had a knack for connecting with people—he loved nothing more than “shooting the breeze” with anyone he encountered.
Grump’s life was defined by his love of the outdoors and his zest for life. He enjoyed playing ball, fishing trips, hunting adventures, camping outings, bowling nights, and lively card games that brought laughter and camaraderie to all who joined him. Renowned for his gift of storytelling, Grump could captivate any audience with tales that were equal parts humorous and heartfelt. His playful spirit shone through as a prankster whose good-natured jokes created lasting memories for family and friends.
Grump’s legacy is one of hard work, humor, and deep connections with those around him. His warmth and wit will forever be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him. May his memory bring comfort to those who carry his stories in their hearts.
A celebration of his life will be held on Thursday, February 6th at 11:00 a.m. at the Elysian United Methodist Church. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Interment will be held at a later date at the Cedar Hill Cemetery in Elysian. A light lunch will be provided at the American Legion in Elysian after the service.
