George H. Porath
George Herman Porath was called home by his Heavenly Father on August 1, 2017 at the age of 96. He was a resident of Lake Shore Inn Nursing Home at the time of his death.
George was born in Wilton Township (Otisco) on May 15, 1921, the son of Herman and Anna Marie (Schilling) Porath. He attended first through eighth grades at the Jones School in Waseca County.
He entered the Army in 1943 and served in the Pacific Theater during WW II. George participated in the invasions of Saipan, Iwo Jima, Guadalcanal, and Guam, and was awarded the Bronze Star.
George married Lorraine Williams on January 23, 1943 in Chicago while on furlough from the Army. They were married for 68 years. He farmed, and worked at Owatonna Manufacturing Company and then Brown Printing Company until his retirement. He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church and the Waseca VFW and American Legion, and his main hobby was watching the Minnesota Twins.
George is survived by his daughters, Georgia (Dennis) Egge of Lakeland, Florida, and Gail (Rick) Buck of O'Fallon, Illinois; 5 grandchildren; and 12 great grandchildren.
George was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Lorraine; son, Gerry; brothers, Henry and John; sister, Louise (Porath) Iverson; and grandson Darin Egge. Services will be held at Grace Lutheran Church in Waseca on Friday August 4, 2017 at 11:00 am. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be at Woodville Cemetery.
