Ernest M. Nelson, age 88 of Faribault, died Sunday, June 19, 2011 at St. Lucas Care Center in Faribault. Funeral services will be held on Monday, June 27, 2011 at 9:30 a.m. at the Parker Kohl Funeral Home & Crematory of Faribault with the Rev. Steven J. Kuehne, Pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church in Faribault, officiating. Interment will be held at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis. Visitation will be held at the Parker Kohl Funeral Home & Crematory on Monday from 9:00 to 9:30 a.m. Ernest Martin, the son of Edwin and Mary (Borgen) Nelson, was born on April 9, 1923 in Baudette, MN. He attended Newfolden High School and graduated with the class of 1941. On December 12, 1942 he was united in marriage to Nadine Lundquist at Reverend Myhre''s home in Newfolden, MN. Shortly after their marriage, Ernie was commissioned to service in the U.S. Army during World War II. He served with the 33D Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron Mecz. He was a radio operator and Expert M-1 Carbine. After his service time Ernie owned and operated E.M. Nelson Concrete Construction Company in Newfolden, MN. He operated with a small crew for over 33 years and retired in 1978. After retiring Ernie wrote "The Pines of Wabasaw", written from his fascination of early settlement days in northern Minnesota. He was a self-taught fiddler and a member of the East Valley Jammers in Arizona. Ernie was a "rock hound", collecting gems in Arizona and on the north shore of Minnesota. He also collected arrowheads in Indiana. Ernie was known for his sense of humor and enjoyed giving others a reason to smile. He was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church and the American Legion Club, both in Newfolden, MN. He is survived by his daughter, Bonnie (Ed) Olson of Faribault; by six grandchildren, Stacey (Jeff) Antes of Rochester, MN, Kristen (Darrin) Anderson of Middle River, MN, Jamey (Kelly) Lysne of Nekoosa, WI, Michael (Elise) Olson of San Francisco, CA, Eric (Sarah) Olson of Brooklyn, NY and Jonathan Olson of San Francisco, CA; by eight great grandchildren, MacKenzie, Garrett and Kendra Lysne, Elias, Noah and Jonah Antes and Retten Knutson and Brandel Bossman and other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, his oldest daughter, Dianna Lysne on Aug. 1, 2003, by two brothers, Duane Nelson and Nestor Austin and by three sisters, Alene Carrier, Muriel Wesolowski and Leone K uznia.
