EDWARD FELIX KUBAT, age 81, of Waseca passed away surrounded by family on Saturday, January 25, 2025 at Mayo Clinic Health System in Mankato after a silent two-year battle with cancer.
Born on October 11, 1943, in Owatonna, Ed was the son of Edward and Elizabeth (Kubichek) Kubat. He graduated from Marian High School with the class of 1961. Following high school, Ed worked at the Hy-Line Hatchery in Owatonna before meeting the love of his life, Gail Billiar, on a double date in 1963. They were married on May 30, 1964, at Sacred Heart Church in Owatonna and celebrated sixty beautiful years of marriage this past May.
In 1969, Ed and Gail moved to Waseca, which became their beloved home. Ed was hired by the City of Waseca and was sent for police training at Arden Hills in Roseville, MN., later joining the Waseca Police Department where he served as a dedicated officer for fourteen years. In 1983, he was elected Waseca County Sheriff, a position he held for sixteen years. After his retirement from law enforcement, Ed spent his time helping with carpet installation, always finding ways to stay busy and contribute to his community.
Ed’s life was defined by his faith, his love for his family, and his unwavering commitment to serving his community. He was a devoted member of Sacred Heart Church, where he volunteered for many years, helping with dishes, fish fries, and ushering. He was a proud member of the Knights of Columbus. Ed also found immense joy in supporting his children and grandchildren at various events, always putting his family first.
Ed cherished the outdoors—especially hunting, fishing, and boating. His cabin in Big Fork was his happy place, where he could relax with his loved ones, sharing treasured moments. Ed was a humble, kind-hearted man, always thinking of others and putting their happiness before his own. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
