DOLORES LOUISE SOMMERS, age 101 of Waseca, died on the morning of Wednesday, December 13, 2023 at Colony Court Assisted Living in Waseca.
Dolores was born in Otisco Township on August 2, 1922 to parents Earl W. and Alma L. (Reitforts) Winegar. She attended school in Waseca until 1938, and was both baptized and confirmed at St. John Lutheran Church in Waseca. On June 1, 1949, she was married to Marvin Edwin Sommers at St. John Lutheran Church in Waseca. They shared fifty years of marriage before Marvin’s passing in the fall of 1999. Over the years she worked mainly as a homemaker and helped out on the family farm. Their family also operated an egg route, delivering fresh eggs on Sunday afternoons. She held various roles at Bird’s Eye Foods, at Winegar, Inc, and finally at the Waseca Senior Citizen’s Center. She and Marvin moved left their farm and moved into town in 1987. Dolores was a lifelong member of St. John Lutheran Church, and she enjoyed traveling, gardening, playing cards, volunteering with Meals on Wheels, and spending time with her extension group, the Wilton Township Ladies. She was also talented in embroidery and quilting, having made quilts for each of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Dolores loved spending time with her family, and her incredible impact on each of them will be felt for generations to come.
Dolores is survived by four children, Marsha (Keith) Vollbrecht of rural Meriden, Debbie (Roger) Supalla of Shakopee, Dennis (Diane) Sommers of Waseca, and Mark Sommers of Waseca; eight grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; and one brother, George (Sharlene) Winegar of Waseca. She was preceded in death by both of her parents; her husband; a brother, Don (Mary) Winegar; a brother-in-law, Melvin (Dorothia) Sommers; two sisters-in-law, Evelyn (John) Kujath, and Carol (Delmar) Oltman; and two beloved “granddogs”, Gracie and Missy.
Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m. on Sunday, December 17, 2023 at the Third Street Chapel of Dennis-Steffel-Omtvedt Funeral and Cremation Service in Waseca, and will continue for one hour before the service at the church on Monday. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be directed to St. John Lutheran Building Fund or to a recipient of the donor’s choice.
