DEAN D. LONG, age 72 formerly of Waseca, died on Thursday, November 15, 2018.
Dean Dale Long, born to Edith and Joe Long in Bismarck, ND on April 17, 1946, was the youngest of nine children. Dean grew up in Dawson, ND, and graduated from Steele-Dawson High School in 1964. After graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Coastguard and served in Vietnam. During his service, Dean gained training in cryptographic repair and as an electronics technician, and earned the rank of ETN 1. Dean was honorably discharged from service in 1968 and enrolled at North Dakota State University, where he earned a Bachelors degree in electronic engineering.
Dean married Joan LeClaire of Stamford, Connecticut, in 1967, and they eventually settled in Waseca, MN in 1974. While in Waseca, Dean was employed at E.F. Johnsons and briefly at Owatonna Tool Company in Owatonna, MN. Joan predeceased him in 1983. In 1994, Dean moved to Quincy, IL, where he worked for Broadcast Electronics until his retirement in 2001.
Dean enjoyed being outdoors and was an avid gardener. His many hobbies included hunting, fishing, canning and pickling, smoking meats, and brewing wine and beer. Dean had a lifelong passion for guns. He held memberships in many gun, shooting, and sportsmans clubs, and was a lifetime member of the NRA. Dean also took courses in gunsmithing – a hobby he greatly enjoyed.
Survivors include his daughters, Deena (Rodger) Hergert and Rebecca (Dave Lee) Adcox, as well as grandson Wyatt Adcox. Dean is also survived by his sisters Carol Bauske, Dorothy Graf, and Joy Neustel, and his brother Joel Long, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Dean was predeceased by his parents, daughter Emily Ann, brother Al ("Bud") Long, and sisters Ethel Nunn and Vera Goodrow.
Graveside services will be held at Woodville Cemetery in Waseca on Friday, November 23 at 1:00 PM.
