DAVID ALVIN HARMON, age 79, of Waterville died on Wednesday evening, November 18, 2020, at Mayo Clinic Health System in Mankato.
Born on June 6, 1941, in Red Wing, MN, was one of six children born to Clarence and Lillian (Swee) Harmon. David grew up in Bombay, attending Dennison Grade School and graduated from Cannon Falls High School in 1959. He continued his education at Winona State where he received his bachelor’s degree in education. On December 21, 1963, David was united in marriage to Darlene Flicek at Spring Garden Lutheran Church in rural Cannon Falls. David taught at various schools throughout his career, first at Canton High School, then Rushford High School, Waterville – Elysian High School, University of Minnesota – Waseca, South Central College in Mankato, and Woodbury High School where he completed his career, retiring in 2003. Throughout his teaching years he specialized in educating students in business and was always the teacher sponsor for DECA and Business Professionals of America (BPA). During his career, David went on to receive his Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership at Mankato State University. He was the recipient of many awards and honors to include the Honorary State FFA degree, Outstanding Business Educator, Teacher Award of Merit, and National Teaching Excellence Award. Education was his life!
In retirement, David and Darlene wintered in Arizona for many years. He enjoyed golfing, playing cards, traveling to visit relatives, and especially attending his grandchildren’s sporting events. In his younger years he was an active member of the Waterville Jaycees. David was a faithful member of North Waseca Lutheran Church, where he served as church president and council member. His family fondly remembers him for his love of people, sense of humor and caring nature that he shared with all who knew him. Above all else he cherished his grandchildren and great grandchild.
Survived by his loving wife, Darlene, of 56 years; children: Dana Van Deinse of Scottsdale, AZ, Doug (Kyna) Harmon of Elysian, and Derrick (Elizabeth) Harmon of Gladstone, MO; grandchildren: Bradley Van Deinse (fiancé, Jenny Hering), Amy Van Deinse, Katie Van Deinse, Tate (Laine) Harmon, Landon (Kaylin) Harmon, ReaAhna Harmon, MaeLea Harmon, Jordan Harmon, Kaidyn Harmon, and Gavin Harmon; great grandchild, Brixton Harmon; siblings: Gordon Harmon of Wisconsin Rapids, WI, LuVerne (_Sung_) Harmon of Tacoma, WA, LuAnn (Leonard) Steele of Parkers Prairie, and Perry (Kay) Harmon of Hawley; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. Preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Eugene Harmon.
Private family service will be held at North Waseca Lutheran Church with interment in the church cemetery. A webcast of David’s service will be available on Thursday at www.dennisfuneralhomes.com.
