Carolynn "Carrie" Westphal was born in Waseca to Gardner and Esther (Ewert) Fischer. She was baptized as an infant and later confirmed in her faith as a youth all at Trinity Lutheran Church in Janesville. Carrie graduated from Janesville High School as the Valedictorian of the class of 1955. Following her education she was united in marriage to LaVern Westphal on August 23, 1955 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Janesville. They shared 56 years of marriage before LaVern passed away on January 17, 2011.
They began their lives together in Charleston, South Carolina until LaVerns Honorable Discharge from the United States Navy. They returned home to Janesville where they moved onto the Fischer Family Farm in Alton Township where they grew crops and milked cows. After raising their children, she worked at the Janesville Nursing Home and MVAC in the WIC program. They continued to live on the family farm their entire married life.
She was a lifelong member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Janesville. Carrie truly enjoyed her life on the farm where she would tend to her huge vegetable and flower gardens. Every fall she would spend many days canning her produce. Even in retirement, Carrie continued to help on the farm. She always looked forward to her trips to Hawaii with Lavern as well as going out dancing regularly. Every year, Carrie and LaVern would make a trip to the State Fair where they would camp for a week. She was a huge Minnesota Sports fan and loved playing bridge. She especially cherished the time she spent with her family and friends. The family would like to extend a special thank you to her friends that would frequently visit Carrie over the past few years and to the staff at BridgeWater of Janesville for making Carries last few months feel as if she were home. She will be dearly missed.
Carrie is survived by her three children: Gail (Donavan) Olson, Gwen (Keith) Wheelock, and Guy (Marilyn) Westphal; her 8 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren; by her sister, Gwendolynn Phalzgraff; sister-in-law, Shirley (Al) Grosskreutz; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
She is preceded in death by her parents, loving husband of 56 years, LaVern, and her sister, Marilynn Roehmildt.
