Anthony G. "Tony" Slechta, age 90 of rural Waseca, died on Wednesday, February 8, 2012 at his home surrounded by his family, in Iosco Township, Waseca County. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, February 13th at 2:00 p.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Waseca, with Fr. Martin Schaefer, Celebrant. Interment with military honors will be in the St. Jarlath Catholic Cemetery, Iosco Township, Waseca County. Visitation will be held on Sunday from 2 to 6 p.m. at McRaith Funeral Home & Crematory in Waseca, and will continue on Monday afternoon for one hour prior to services, at church. There will be a 5:30 p.m. Parish Rosary prayed Sunday afternoon at the funeral home. Anthony George was born on June 30, 1921 in Waterville, Minnesota to Thomas and Lena (Thiesen) Slechta. "Tony" attended Waseca County School Dist. #74. As a soldier in the United States Army, Tony served over two years in the European Theatre during WWII. Following his honorable discharge from the military in October of 1945, he returned home and began farming. He was united in marriage to Dorothy Mae Mariska on September 10, 1947 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Waterville. In addition to farming, Tony was employed with the Department of Natural Resources-Division of Fisheries in Waterville. He farmed until 1968 and continued his career with the DNR until retiring on July 1, 1983. Tony was a longtime member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Waseca, the Elysian American Legion Post #311, and the Waseca VFW Sweet-Sommers Post #1642. Tony was also a member of the Southern Minnesota Dark House Association- Southern Lakes Chapter. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, trapping, gardening, playing cards, and time spent with his family and friends. Tony loved to socialize with people of all ages. He is survived by his children, Dianne (Tom) Walther of Waseca, Sandy (Phil) Janzen of Mankato, Yvonne (Barney) Marsh of Morristown, Delores (Greg) Dennis of Waseca, Barb (Curt) Ahlman of Janesville, Thomas (Roxy) Slechta of rural Waseca, Joyce Lewer of Janesville, Annette (Jim) Snyder, and Bob (Molly) Slechta, all of Waterville; by 24 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren, step-grandchildren and step-great grandchildren; by his sisters Leona Pittmann of Waterville, Agnes Ludington of Spokane, WA, and his brothers, Charles Slechta of Albany, OR, and Kenneth (Doris) Slechta of Waterville; by his sister-in-aw, Rosemary Mariska of Morristown, and many nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
