ALICE MARIE BENNIE, age 89, of Waseca died on Saturday, March 18, 2023, at LakeShore Rehabilitation Center in Waseca.
Born on September 10, 1933, in Canton, Illinois to Edward and Carrie (Neff) Walljasper. She attended Canton Senior High, graduating with the class of 1951. On June 14, 1952, Alice was united in marriage to James Bennie at St. Mary Catholic Church in Canton, Illinois. For a short time, Alice studied secretarial management and was proud of her career working for Caterpillar although it was cut short when Alice and James began having a family in their late 20’s. Alice and James lived in various communities throughout the Midwest due to James’ career. Although she never worked outside of the home after having children, Alice always integrated herself in each and every community they lived through volunteering. After James’ retirement in 1992, they moved to Waseca to be closer to family. She cherished the time she spent with them. During her time in Waseca she volunteered with Hospice, Friends of the Library, and the Waseca Arts Council. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Waseca. Alice enjoyed playing bridge, watching the birds and deer, and reading, especially mysteries. Alice was a quiet and unassuming woman but will be remembered as a pillar who always looked out for others with her loving nature.
Alice is survived by her daughter, Sabrina (Leo) Nissen of Waseca; grandchildren: Katie (Babak) Oskoui, Jacqui Tucker (Andres Zuniga), Carolyn (Cody) Tebbitt, and Alex Bennie (Zoreli Rivera-Guzman); great grandson, Calvin Oskoui; daughter-in-law, Jessica (Ron DeRooi) Bennie of Bettendorf, IA; seven step-grandchildren; 16 step-great grandchildren; siblings: Keith Walljasper of Normal, IL, and Mary St. Clair of Canton, IL; sister-in-law, June Walljasper of Canton, IL; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
